Meet The Doctors Behind Intelligent Skin Care

Dr. Leah Press, M.D.

Dr. Leah Press, M.D.

Professionally and personally, Dr. Leah Press enjoys sharing her experiences and knowledge with the intent to show colleagues, patients, and students that helping others can provide the greatest reward. Dr. Press says she is “very excited and honored” to be among this year’s Top Ten recipients.

Dr. Press graduated from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, and completed her internship and residency in Dermatology at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. In 1983, Dr. Press moved to Fresno to open her practice in Dermatology.

Over the years, her professional career has flourished.  She has studied the effect of ultraviolet light on the skin as a treatment for psoriasis at the Massachusetts General Hospital, been involved in clinical trials on pre-cancerous lesions of actinic keratosis, and pigment changes in the skin.  Her involvement in research has prompted her to publish an article on rosacea entitled Red-Faced About Rosacea, that discusses diagnosing and finding treatment for rosacea.

Aside from Dr.Press’s involvement with medical research, she has developed a state of the art practice incorporating medical, oncologic surgery, radiation, and cosmetic procedures into her practice.  She has also developed a medical spa called Intelligent Skincare, which provides the latest and most effective skin care services to her patients.

Dr.Press has also been actively involved in professional organizations including California Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery.  Additionally, she served on the Task Force on Skin Disease in Developing Countries for the American Academy of Dermatology.  The mission of this committee was to provide necessary tools for training physicians in third world countries in the diagnosis and treatment of the skin conditions found in disadvantaged areas.

Along with her own practice and research, Dr. Press committed her time for about 20 years to teach Dermatology to young physicians, medical students, and nurse practitioners at the Pediatric clinic affiliated with UCSF. She also is a mentor for the Doctors Academy, which teaches disadvantaged and underrepresented youth in three local high schools about a career in health care.  Dr.Press invites these students to spend several weeks in her office and teaches them about Dermatology.  When asked about this topic, Dr. Press proudly says, “I am very passionate about helping high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds.   I enjoy having them come to my office and teaching them about Dermatology.”

Aside from her professional career, Dr. Press has made significant contributions both within her community and in other communities.  Locally, Dr. Press participates in free cancer screenings organized by the Cancer Society and the Mexican consulate, which allows uninsured individuals to be checked for signs of skin cancer, including melanoma. She also actively participates in various organizations, including serving as a board member of the Jewish Federation of Central California and hosting fundraiser dinners celebrating the Native American culture to support the San Joaquin River Parkway.

Globally, Dr. Press has traveled to Mexico and Honduras to provide health care to communities that have limited to zero access to physicians.  “I find it really exciting to provide this service to people who do not have access to it,” says Dr.Press.  She strives to be a role model to her colleagues, medical students, and patients, and continues her good work to improve the world for future generations.
